Central Computing Unit

The Central Computing Unit (CCU) is the vehicle's brain, managing and coordinating various electronic systems. It integrates and processes data from sensors and subsystems, ensuring optimal performance, safety, and efficiency. It manages advanced electronic systems like autonomous driving (ADAS), power windows, door locks, and air conditioning. It also enables vehicle connectivity for telematics, infotainment, and internet services, while ensuring cybersecurity against unauthorized access. The central computing unit also manages an EV powertrain's battery, charging, and inverter functions. As autonomous driving technology advances, the CCU's role becomes even more critical, requiring advanced computing power and sophisticated algorithms to manage and execute autonomous functions. Here are some of Amphenol’s state-of-the-art connectors which enable these advanced capabilities.

Battery Management System

The battery is considered as the strategic component of any electric vehicle. All electric vehicles (EVs) are equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) that intelligently controls the battery charge and protects it from operations beyond the safe limits. It consistently monitors the battery pack during charge and discharge sessions and optimizes the performance by balancing the cells inside the pack, thus improving the battery life and capacity. The accuracy, performance and reliability of the BMS whilst maintaining safety standards is defined by the components used within the system. Amphenol offers a range of compact, flexible high performing automotive grade connectors for these power circuit designs.

EV Powertrain

The EV Powertrain deals with the mechanics of how an Electric Vehicle stores energy and then uses it for propulsion. Electricity is stored in EV Lithium-ion batteries in the form of direct current (DC). While the batteries can be charged directly using direct current (DC fast charging), conventional AC outlets require a vehicle-mounted on-board charger to convert the alternating current (AC) to DC for storage. A battery management system then ensures equal DC power distribution across all individual battery cells. The stored energy is then sourced to an inverter that converts the DC to AC, which powers the traction motors mounted on vehicle axles to drive the wheels. A vehicle control unit (VCU) manages the functions of the powertrain, including charging operations, battery management, and power conversion and distribution.

Featured Products

On-Board Chargers are an integral and built-in part of Electric Vehicles for interfacing with AC-based charging systems from home or office. The Alternating Current (AC) supplied by the charger passes through the cable to reach the OBC, which then converts it to DC to charge the EV battery under the supervision of the Battery Management System (BMS). Amphenol provides power and wire-to-board solutions to on-Board chargers.

The power inverter/converter unit within an electric vehicle converts the high voltage DC energy from the battery to a multiphase AC current that helps to drive the traction motor. The EV power management system also comes with a converter that does the reverse function at times of regenerative braking. The inverters are also capable of controlling the motor speed by adjusting the frequency as well as the voltage of the alternate current. Amphenol provides high-reliability power connectors and custom data and power solutions for the EV inverters/converters.

A Cell Connection System (CCS) is integrated into the top battery cover of the EV battery module to bring high-voltage connectivity as well as channel signals like temperature and pressure sensing information to the BMS. The CCS supports monitoring and controlling the charging and discharging, thus safeguarding both the battery and the vehicle. Check out Amphenol’s advanced solutions for Cell Connection Systems.

Vehicle Control Units (VCU) are considered the powertrain management system within an electric vehicle. They help with various functionalities of a vehicle from torque coordination, to gearshift operations, voltage management, and charging control. It is responsible for most processes associated with the functional aspects of electric and hybrid vehicles. It takes driver inputs, calculates the torque based on the accelerator and brake pedal positions and the gearbox setting, and passes it to the power inverter/converter. Advanced VCUs can cater for on-board diagnosis, thermal management, and much more for electric and connected vehicles. Amphenol provides data and power connectors along with custom solutions for VCUs.
