Amphenol Solutions for Advanced Automotive Electronics

ADAS is the key feature of modern vehicles which adds to safety and comfort. Today, ADAS come with advanced sensors, specialized designs, and innovative architectures which have led its way to autonomous or driverless cars. Adaptive Cruise Control, Anti-lock Brakes, High Beam Safety System, Traffic Signals Recognition, Forward Collision Warning, Pedestrian Recognition, Departure Warning, Traction control, Auto Parking, etc - are some of the established features of ADAS and is undergoing constant innovations aiming for a complete vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Technological advancements in the areas of Automotive imaging, LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), and high-speed Automotive Ethernet connectivity, particularly in how they work in combination, have made ADAS work more efficiently. However, to ensure the consistent performance of these systems, it is essential to opt for reliable connectors.

Amphenol's USCAR-2 compliant HSBridge+ connectors support advanced infotainment, telematics, and camera devices across automotive and commercial vehicle industries. The HSBridge+ connector system come with automotive grade USB Type C interface and have headers compliant to USCAR-30 USB that help in connecting the automobile with high bandwidth personal infotainment devices. The USB 3.1 is a one port solution for data, power and A/V providing increased productivity and satisfaction compared to USB 2.0. With high data rates up to 5Gb/s, the HSBridge+ connectors meet UL94V-0 flammability rating, and protect against mechanical stress between a flexible electrical line and its connection port using over-molded design on the cable side.

As vehicles are prone to constant vibration and stress while on the run, floating board-to-board connectors play an important role in maintaining the performance of advanced automotive electronic systems. Amphenol offers the FLTStack 0.50mm floating board-to-board (BTB) connector. These USCAR connectors are designed to operate a minimum of ±0.50mm floating range in the XY directions. With a 0.50mm pitch size, 0.5A/pin current carrying capacity, and 3Gb/s communication data rates, they feature built-in guideposts that enable a self-cleaning function, vibration resistance, and self-alignment for easier mating. An effective mating length of 0.90mm provides Z directions with sufficient margin for its mating stroke.

Amphenol's HSD Connectors and HSC Connectors are USCAR-2 compliant fully shielded automotive connectors ideal for ADAS. With 0.50mm square terminals, the HSC connectors allow a lighter and smaller connector design supporting data rates up to 1Gb/s and more. It is used in automotive applications like LVDS, camera. HSD (High-Speed Data) connectors have a high-performance digital system for low-voltage differential signals which prevents interference from crosstalk and external sources.

The USCAR-2 compliant BergStak® 0.40mm self-alignment board-to-board connector offers a unique self-alignment feature that supports blind mating, ensuring a reliable connection. These connectors come with a 3.50mm stack height and 30 positions extendable from 10 up to 60 positions and meet PCIe® Gen 3 standards with speed performance of up to 8Gb/s.

Automotive Ethernet Connectors

All the above connectors go into various systems that not only support ADAS but also other systems in modern vehicles like Telematics, multimedia, GPS, navigation, and camera components. Nowadays, these are tailored to run using modern Automotive Ethernet technology. Amphenol's NETBridge™ Automotive Ethernet Connector System is an ideal example for Automotive Ethernet Connectors. These LV214 connectors are also compliant with other standards like USCAR-2, VDAAK, and ISO 8092-2. Ideal for all modern automotive applications, these connectors can transmit up to 100Mbit/s and 1Gbit/s according to IEEE 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1. With a mechanically robust design, they are easy to install and position assurance feature for a secondary lock of contact ensures proper connector assembly.

Automotive Lighting Connectors

Automotive lighting also plays a major role in modern vehicles. Both Minitek MicroSpace™ and Minitek MicroSpaceXS™ are ideal options for advanced automotive lighting features like smart LED lighting for adaptive headlights, and superior interior lighting.

Amphenol's Minitek MicroSpaceXS™ Crimp-to-Wire connectors are available in standard and waterproof versions. These LV214 connectors are also USCAR-T2V2 compatible. These 1.27mm pitch connectors come with a current rating of up to 4A and 3A per contact for standard and Waterproof Crimp-to-Wire Connectors respectively for making them ideal for higher power applications. The TPA and CPA feature ensures proper mating of the header and receptacle and avoids unintentional triggers of the latch.

The Minitek MicroSpace™ connectors come in 1.80, 1.50, and 1.27mm pitch sizes and are LV214 Severity-2 compatible. The Minitek 1.27 Connector is rated up to 100 mating cycles on Gold/GXT® contacts and enables a current rating of up to 4A per contact. In addition to LV214, this vibration-tolerant connector is marked by its high connector locking strength of more than 75N making it an ideal option for automotive lighting applications.

Battery Management System and EV Connectors

Innovation in automotive industry is not confined to internal combustion engine vehicles, but the increasing focus on green energy has spurred much innovation and technology advancements in electric vehicles. Amphenol offers a wide portfolio of power efficient solutions for modern EV charging stations, supporting 15A-1000A ratings, low contact resistance, high thermal support, and component modularity. Apart from charging stations, Amphenol also offers interconnect solutions for EV Battery Management Systems (BMS). BMS intelligently controls the battery charge of an electric vehicle and protects it from operations beyond safe limits. The accuracy, performance, and reliability of the BMS are defined by connectors supporting the system.

Amphenol offers a range of compact, flexible high performing automotive grade connectors for these power circuit designs. Our latest WireLock® 1.80mm connectors are designed to address the growing need for space-saving automotive-grade connectors. These compact connectors with a 1.80mm pitch size are USCAR-2 V2 compatible and are available in 10 to 40 positions in a double row with vertical and horizontal TH and SMT configurations. The TPA and CPA features ensure proper mating, thus enhancing the performance of applications like BMS even in adverse conditions with increased vibrations.

Besides these, a broad range of Amphenol's wire-to-board, board-to-board, FFC/FPC, and IO connectors are used in various other automotive applications.
