Power connectors are one of the most common interconnects we handle in our day-to-day life. Any of the consumer electronics that you plug into a wall socket will have a power connector associated with it. Generally, all these devices use AC power, whereas DC connectors are used in applications like battery packs and automotive accessories. Apart from this, there are also high power connectors, which are ideally used in critical applications like aerospace, military, and advanced industry floors. The types of power connectors vary with their voltage, current rating, size, and design depending on the application you use them.
Our latest connectors are made with highly advanced materials and designs that support next-generation power distribution. However, most modern application leads to increased power consumption and energy costs and Amphenol is focused on developing energy and cost-efficient power solution architectures to overcome this. AGT® and GCS® are our patented two new silver-based plating technologies that offer a 10% to 20% increase in current carrying capacity, ultra-low resistance, and reduced costs as compared to Gold or Gold Flash based -PdNi plating.
Power Connectors for Power Supply
Amphenol provides a set of power connectors that especially target Power Supply Units within datacenters and Desktop PC SMPS. Amphenol's PwrMAX® connector family offers compact high density and high current connectors suitable for up to 100A DC power in modern system architectures. PwrMAX® G2 carries up to 100A per contact, is the highest density blind mate power and signal connector. With a reduced depth on board from 32.4mm to 27.4mm, these connectors offer overall space savings of 18%. PwrMAX® Ortho as the name suggests is a similar compact power connector with 100A DC power ideal for orthogonal or PCB edge-to-PCB edge applications.
Similar to PwrMAX®, with an excellence of 20 years in the market, PwrBlade® is yet another popular product from Amphenol which offers a hybrid solution with both power and signal contacts to provide power distribution and power control in a single connector. These Server System Infrastructure (SSI) compliant connector interfaces are perfect for both pluggable power supplies and power distribution applications and are available in 1 to 20 power contacts and up to 148 signal contacts. The advanced version of this, PwrBlade® ULTRA connectors with a 75A per power contact are made with ultra-high conductivity materials and plating, to provide ultra-low resistance of 0.4mΩ at end-of-life conditions. These are offered in high power, low power and signal versions with an overall height reduction of 24% to reduce airflow impedance in high-density power supplies. The PwrBlade+® connectors are built on the PwrBlade® connector's proven technology with enhancements to achieve increased performance and density. With a 58A per power contact, it is ideal for next-generation 1U/2U servers, storage enclosures, telecommunications equipment, and datacom/networking equipment.
Minitek® Pwr is yet another legacy product from Amphenol which is offered in 3.00mm, 4.20mm, and 5.70mm pitch sizes with a current rating of 8.5A, 9A, and 23A per contact respectively. Minitek® Pwr 3.0 and 4.2 are offered with Blind Mate Interface (BMI), allowing ±2.54mm gather-ability for blind mating. The High Current versions of both these connectors are offered with current rating up to 12A and 13A per contact and wire gauge range from 16AWG to 30AWG respectively. Minitek Pwr 4.2 connectors also feature Terminal position assurance (TPA) which helps in preventing accidental terminal back-out ensuring electrical continuity and making it ideal for critical applications.
Amphenol has a wide range of other connectors ideal for Power Supply including HCI® standard and Power connectors, Cool Power® SDM and Slim Drawer Series, PwrLoPro® connectors, and Mini Power and Micro Power wire-to-board connectors offering 3.00mm, 4.2mm in pitches and 17A, 20A per pin respectively in standard, Plus, and Super versions.
Backplane Power Connectors
High Power backplane and midplane connectors are ideal for chassis-based equipment platforms that require additional power at the interface of a daughter card and a backplane or midplane. Our HCI® High Power modules are rated for up to 113A per contact and are designed as a perfect complement to Amphenol's ExaMAX®, AirMax®, ZipLine®, and Millipacs® signal connectors. These compact connectors use proven stamped-and formed HCI power contact technology to provide increased linear power density.
Similar to this AirMax® Power Connectors also assure compatibility with the hard metric signal connectors and are ideal for applications where the bulk current is delivered by backplane to components on a mating daughter card that consumes power. Apart from this Amphenol's high power backplane connectors include high-speed XCede® used in data centers, fully shielded I/O interconnect system SOFIX®, DIN-41612 based high and medium power DIN connectors, and Millipacs® 2.00mm modular board-to-board or cable-to-board Hard Metric Hybrid connectors.
High-Power Card Edge Connectors
Similar to the backplane, Amphenol also offers high-power card edge connectors. Our Power Card Edge connectors offer a cost-effective design for power distribution between closed boards within an enclosure and for DC power output from embedded AC/DC power supplies. The High Power Card Edge (HPCE) connectors are offered in board-to-board and mezzanine versions. HPCE® incorporates an innovative power contact and housing design for demanding applications requiring high linear current density and low power loss by allowing a compact and lower profile package for demanding AC and DC power supply. The HPCE® Mezzanine power connectors feature a 20A/40A power contact, a ventilated housing design, and a PCB Bridge. eHPCE® connectors are much similar to the standard HPCE connectors, however offer a 15% increase in power density and an enhanced performance with the same footprint. These energy-efficient connectors are used in many modern applications supporting Industry 4.0.
Apart from this, the high-density card edge series 3000W EnergyEdge™ X-treme supports hyperscale computing and Industry 4.0. These feature the highest linear density available in the market today with up to a 23% size reduction compared to eHPCE® and carrying 3000W in the same 43mm space.
Busbar Power Connectors
Besides, card edge versions, our Busbar connectors from the BarKlip® family support advanced applications in networks and telecommunications, including high power applications in hyperscale computing architectures using busbars for power distribution with a current-carrying capacity ranging from 100A to 300A. With Silver and Tin plated contacts, BarKlip® XP series is capable of distributing anywhere from 150A to 1000A of power to busbar power distribution applications. SheerPwr® Circular and PwrBlok® connectors are high current power solutions for board-to-board, board-to-busbar, and busbar-to-busbar power distribution applications.
Custom Power Connectors
Amphenol's custom power connectors are also gaining popularity recently. Our customized battery or charger connectors and terminals meet general industry standards and are available in various pin configurations and connector sizes to making them suitable for myriads of applications like cordless power tools, battery charging connections for E-bikes, lawn mowers, and robotic vacuum cleaners. EazyPwr™ IP67 field-installable connector is yet another solution with up to 125A per contact and a wide range of customizable components to fit specific application needs.
The newest addition to our power connector portfolio is the compact, hybrid, and power board-to-board connectors - ComboStak® and PowerStak®. While PowerStak® is a standalone power version, ComboStak® is the combination of existing BergStak® 0.8mm pitch signal pins 2.00mm pitch power blades.
