In a digital world, the demands for faster, efficient and compact storage devices are increasing. From mobile devices and laptops to hyper scale datacenters, there are myriads of devices that use high performance storage with reduced power and lower footprint. Though hard disk drives (HDD) were the most common form of storage that had prevailed over the years, today they are being exceedingly replaced by solid state drives (SSDs) because of their performance advantages. Although derived from flash, SSDs are more reliable than the conventional flash memory chips used in USB cables, with their capability to retain data even without power, and to perform much faster, and more efficiently. Advanced SSDs are expected to be in service, catering to applications with high drive utilization.
The best SSDs are defined by a high data rate, i.e., the capacity to transmit data at higher speeds with low latency. This not only enhances the user experience by handling multiple data requests simultaneously with a shorter response time, but also offers increased reliability with minimal bit error rates, better tolerance to extreme temperatures and high endurance. As SSDs are subject to different levels of demand depending on the applications they are used, they can be broadly classified into three, based on the current market segments: Consumer SSDs used in mobile devices and tablets, Client SSDs used in Laptops and Personal Computers, and Enterprise SSDs used in enterprise computing platforms like hyperscale computing and data centers.
Solid State Drives typically use storage interfaces such as SATA, SAS, or Fiber Channel and connector interfaces like SATA, M.2 and PCIe card edge connectors. Amphenol offers a wide range of interconnects for SSDs.
SATA Connectors
SATA (Serial ATA connector) is one of the first interfaces adopted for an SSD. SATA SSDs come in 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch box-shaped form factors and have bandwidth up to 6GT/s. These are considered as the first form of enterprise SSDs and are less expensive compared to its counterparts. Amphenol offers a wide range of high performance SATA connectors. They are designed to support up to 12Gb/s data rates with contacts ranging from 7 to 22 positions.
SAS Connectors
A SAS SSD though similar to SATA SSD in size and shape, delivers a faster data transfer rate and support dual-port operation along with enhanced reliability in terms of error correction, data integrity, and high signal quality. With a speed of 24Gb/s, Amphenol's SAS 4.0 Connectors come with 29-position receptacle and plug featuring hot-plugging and blind-mating, connector misalignment compensation, and a PCB retention mechanism for robust SMT attachment. Compatible with SFF8681 specification, these connectors are SATA compliant and are compatible to 12G, 6G and 3G SAS connectors.
Apart from this, Amphenol offers U.2 and U.3 connectors which support one of the most common SSD form factors. Compatible with SFF8639 specification, our SAS/PCIe 3.0 U.2 connectors are designed for next-generation servers with 12Gb/s SSDs and 8GT/s PCle based storage. These SAS plugs are backward compatible with 6Gb/s SAS, SATA and 3Gb/s SFF8482 connectors, which support the same interface, making it a cost-effective solution for higher-performance server SSDs.
On the other hand, the more advanced 68-position SAS/PCIe® 4.0 U.2 and U.3 connectors come with 16GT/s (PCIe® lanes) or 24Gb/s (SAS lanes) speeds to meet the demands of next-generation servers. With a durability of 500 mating cycles, these SSD connectors enable SFF8630, SFF8680 and SFF8432 interfaces. Amphenol also offers SAS/PCIe 5.0 U.2 and U.3 connectors with 32GT/s (PCIe lanes) and 24Gb/s (SAS lanes) speeds. Backward compatible with 12Gb/s and 6Gb/s SAS, SATA, and 3Gb/s SFF8482 connectors and receptacles, and inter-mateable with unshielded dual port SFF8680 (SAS 3.0/SAS 4.0) connectors, they offer enhanced flexibility and are designed to be economical.
PCIe® Connectors
In addition to the SAS and SATA range, we also have an extended offering of PCIe® card edge connectors across various generations supporting modern SSDs. The 1.00mm pitch, vertical and right angle PCIe® Gen 4 and Gen 5 connectors support speeds from 2.5GT/s (Gen 1), 5.0GT/s (Gen 2), and 8.0GT/s (Gen 3), to 16GT/s (Gen 4), and even further up to Gen 5 32GT/s per differential signal pair, making it easily upgradable to the next-generation systems. Along with that, they are also backward compatible to Gen 1/2/3 specification, with the exception of Gen 5 straddle mount.
With a very compact form factor, the all new M.2 Gen 5 Connectors occupy lesser board space, offer more height options and support higher data rates up to 32 Gb/s. Amphenol's PCIe® M.2 Gen 3 and Gen 4 connectors support higher data rates and are also compatible with USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0 applications. These PCI express card edge connectors with 67 contacts on 0.50mm pitch are fully compliant with PCI-SIG PCIe® M.2 specifications and offer design flexibility with 75 positions with 8 connector key options.
Cool Edge Connectors
Amphenol's Mini Cool Edge 0.60mm connectors are ideally used in many advanced SSDs. They meet SFF-TA-1002, Gen Z, EDSFF, and OCP NIC 3.0 specifications and support high speed requirements from 32GT/s to 56GT/s, and even up to 112GT/s PAM4. Micro Cool Edge NF1/NGSFF 0.50mm is a new small form factor card edge connector designed for enterprise and data center SSDs with double storage capacity and when compared to the M.2 standards, can enable front side service within server systems.
With 16GT/s Gen 4 and 32GT/s Gen 5 capabilities, our Cool Edge PCIe® connectors are slim one-piece card edge packages with a simple housing design and an overall reduced footprint, providing additional benefits over standard PCIe® CEM solutions.
Amphenol has the best solutions for SSDs available in market today and we are constantly updating our range of connectors to meet the requirements by innovations happening in the industry.
